How much water a lawn here actually needs, how to measure what your sprinkler puts down, and why a forecast is not the same thing as water in the ground.
The short version
An established lawn in Marshall County wants roughly an inch of water a week, rainfall included, delivered in one or two deep soakings rather than a short run every evening. Early morning is the time; a rain gauge is the tool.
That is the whole guide in three lines, and for most lawns most of the year it is enough. Everything below is why it is that number, how to find out what your own system actually delivers, and the handful of situations where the rule does not apply.
The exceptions matter, though, and they are the ones people get wrong. New sod and new seed want the opposite pattern. A lawn in real shade wants less. A lawn that has gone dormant through drought wants something different again. And a freeze changes the answer completely.
Why deep and infrequent
A deep soak invites roots down after the moisture. A light sprinkle every evening keeps the top inch damp and gives the plant no reason to go any deeper, which is why daily-watered lawns are the ones that collapse first in August.
Grass roots follow moisture. Water deeply and the wet zone sits several inches down, so that is where the roots go, and a lawn with roots four or five inches into the soil has a reservoir to draw on when a dry fortnight arrives. Water lightly and often and the roots stay in the top inch, which is exactly the layer that dries out first and heats up most.
The practical consequence shows up in July rather than in May. Two lawns watered the same total amount, one deeply twice a week and one lightly every day, look identical in spring and completely different by the middle of summer. The second one is living hand to mouth and any interruption - a holiday, a broken timer, a water restriction - shows within days.
This is also why the advice changes for new sod. A freshly laid piece of sod has no roots in the soil at all, so it cannot reach anything below itself and has to be kept damp until it does. That is covered separately in the new sod and seed guide.
Measuring
Nobody can tell you how many minutes to run a sprinkler, because output varies enormously between systems and even between zones on the same system. Twenty minutes of one head is a soaking; twenty minutes of another barely wets the surface.
The catch-can test settles it in fifteen minutes and you only ever have to do it once per zone. Put four or five straight-sided containers out across the area the sprinkler covers - empty tuna cans are the traditional choice because the sides do not taper - run the sprinkler for fifteen minutes, then measure the depth in each one and average them.
Multiply up and you have your own run time for half an inch. You will also find out something more useful: which part of the zone is getting half what the rest gets. Almost every system has a dry corner, and it is usually the corner that has been reseeded three times.
On the clay that covers most of this county, there is a second problem. Water arrives faster than the soil can take it and the surplus runs off down the drive. Splitting a zone into two shorter cycles half an hour apart lets the first pass wet the surface so the second one can actually soak in. On a slope it is close to essential.
Rain
Rainfall counts toward the weekly inch, but only rainfall that actually fell. A sixty percent chance of storms is not a reason to skip a watering on a lawn that is already showing footprints.
This is the single most common watering mistake in this part of Alabama, and it is not a mistake about lawns - it is a mistake about weather. Summer rain here is convective and wildly local. A storm can put half an inch on one side of Guntersville and nothing at all four miles away, so a forecast for the area tells you very little about your own yard.
A rain gauge costs a few dollars and removes the guesswork completely. Failing that, the screwdriver test works: push a long screwdriver into the soil, and if it slides in four to six inches without a fight, the lawn has had a genuine drink. If it stops after an inch, what fell wetted the surface and nothing more.
The other half of this is knowing when the lawn is asking. Grass tells you before it is in trouble, and it does so in a consistent order: the color shifts from green toward a dull blue-grey, the blades fold or roll lengthwise, and footprints stay visible for several minutes after somebody walks across. One of those is a hint. All three is a lawn that needed water yesterday.

A useful rain. Most lawns can wait several days after this, particularly if it came down slowly enough to soak in rather than run off.
That is the week done. Leave it alone, and if an area is still soft underfoot three days later you have a drainage question rather than a watering one.
By species and by season
The inch a week is a starting point for an established lawn in the open. Species, shade, soil and the time of year all move it, sometimes considerably.
Bermuda and zoysia are the most drought tolerant of the grasses grown here and will go dormant rather than die when water runs short. Tall fescue is the least tolerant and is usually the first thing to thin in a hot dry July. Centipede and St. Augustine sit in between. Shade changes it as much as species does. Shaded soil dries far more slowly, so running one schedule across the whole lawn typically leaves the shaded part wet and the sunny part dry. If the shade comes from mature trees there is a second factor, because the tree is taking the water first and it is a much bigger plant than the grass.
Through the year, spring usually needs very little because the soil is still holding winter moisture. Summer is when the inch a week matters. Fall tapers off as nights cool, and a dormant warm-season lawn in winter needs almost nothing at all. The seasonal calendar lays the whole year out.

Safety and common sense
There are four situations where the answer is simply no, and none of them are about the grass.
Watering during a restriction is worth a note of its own, because people worry about it more than they need to. Bermuda and zoysia can sit through a dry restricted summer in dormancy and green back up when conditions allow. Raise the mowing height, keep traffic off it, and let it wait.
Answers
About an inch, rainfall included, for an established lawn. On shallow or sandy soil in peak summer heat it can be a little more.
Early morning, roughly between four and nine. Less is lost to evaporation, pressure is usually better, and the blades dry as the sun comes up. Evening watering leaves the leaf wet all night, which suits turf diseases.
It depends how much fell. Push a long screwdriver into the soil: if it slides in four to six inches easily, the lawn has had a drink. Half an inch of rain or less usually only wets the surface.

Yes. Saturated soil pushes the air out and roots cannot breathe, which turns a lawn yellow in a way that looks like hunger but is not. Constant leaf wetness also suits turf disease.
