Planning

The display is worked out before anything goes up

A good display is planned rather than improvised on the day. What is being lit, from where, and how it will read from the road are decided first, because those decisions determine everything about the install.

The usual elements are the roofline, which gives the property its outline, and then whatever the property has that is worth picking out: columns, porch rails, specimen trees, the shape of the beds along the front. Which of those are worth lighting is largely a question of what can actually be seen from where people will see it.

It is also worth deciding early how far the display goes. A crisp roofline and two well-lit trees generally look better than lights spread thinly across everything, and it costs less. Walking the property and agreeing the scheme is part of the estimate.

Installation

How the lights go up, and what has to be checked

Lights are attached with fixings intended for the surface they are going on, and the runs are planned around where power is actually available.

Attachment matters more than it sounds. The point is to hold the run in a straight, even line for a couple of months of weather and then come off in January without leaving marks or damage behind. Different surfaces take different clips, and shingles, gutters, timber trim and masonry are not interchangeable.

Power is the other planning question and it is usually the one that decides the layout. Where the exterior outlets are, what is on the same circuit, and how much is being asked of it all need to be known before the runs are set, and that is worth walking through together at the estimate. Some properties have plenty of capacity in the right places; some do not, and it is better to know in October.

Weather governs the schedule. Installation happens on days when it is safe to be working at height, which means wind and ice move dates. That is the main reason the calendar needs slack in it, and the main reason to book early.

The season

Storage is worth mentioning on its own. A tangled box of lights that has spent a year in a hot garage is most of the reason the following December starts badly. Taking them down properly, labelling the runs and storing them is what makes the next install straightforward.
